On January 27, 2022 Provost Richard Holz announce that Ivar Reimanis was the new head of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering
Department. Dr. Reimanis is the former Director of the Colorado Center for Advanced Ceramics (CCAC) and still an active faculty member in our center.

Dear Mines faculty and staff,
I am pleased to announce that Ivar Reimanis has agreed to become the permanent head of the Metallurgical and Materials Engineering Department.
A longtime member of the MME faculty, Ivar joined Mines in 1994 as an assistant professor of ceramic engineering. He received tenure in 1998 and was named a full professor in 2003. Since 2012, he has held the position of Herman F. Coors Distinguished Professor of Ceramic Engineering. He has served as interim department head since July 2021 and also from 2014 to 2016.
Ivar holds a PhD in Materials from the University of California, Santa Barbara, a M.S. in Materials Science and Mineral Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley, and a B.S. in Materials Science and Engineering from Cornell University. He completed his postdoctoral studies at the Max Planck Institute in Stuttgart, Germany, and Los Alamos National Laboratory.
As department head, Ivar said he’s looking forward to positioning the department to take advantage of the tremendous growth opportunities in materials engineering.
“My goals are aligned with the goals of MINES@150,” he said. “We need to maintain our world-class status in metallurgy while growing substantially in ceramics. I plan to sustain our excellent relationships with industry and help create new ones. As we evolve, it is critical to enhance our diversity at all levels. And, perhaps most importantly, I want the people in our department to feel like they have a home, where the values of collegiality, transparency, inclusion, collaboration and ethics are paramount.”
